Tiger Trappers — Ivan Bahrianyi

Ivan Bahrianyi’s novel *The Tiger Hunters* is one of the most famous adventure novels in Ukrainian literature. It is a story about the indomitable human spirit, the struggle for freedom, and the triumph of life over death.

1.  Escape from the “death train”: Young aviator Hryhorii Mnohohrishnyi, sentenced by the system to 25 years, jumps from the train carrying prisoners to Siberia. He chooses death in the taiga over slavery in a penal colony.2.  Rescue and Life with the Sirko Family:Exhausted, Grigory saves Natalka Sirko—the daughter of Ukrainian tiger hunters—from a bear. The family takes him in as one of their own. Living in the taiga, Grigory regains his strength, learns to hunt tigers, and falls in love with Natalka, finding true inner freedom.3.  Hunting the Torturer: The past catches up with the hero in the form of NKVD Major Medvin, who once tortured Grigory and is now hunting him in the taiga. In the decisive confrontation, the “prey” and the “hunter” switch places: Grigory metes out just punishment to the NKVD officer and kills him.4.  The Path to Freedom: Realizing that he will find no peace in the USSR, Grigory crosses the border into Manchuria with Natalka. The work concludes with the triumph of freedom and the legendary phrase: “The brave are always lucky.”
