The Heroism of the Tragedy of Kruty — Collective Authors
“The Heroism of the Tragedy at Kruty” is a historical and documentary collection dedicated to one of the most tragic and, at the same time, most heroic chapters in Ukrainian history—the Battle of Kruty, which took place on January 29, 1918.
Documentary Chronicle: This collection brings together unique archival materials, period photographs, orders, memoirs of the few combatants who survived the battle, and eyewitness accounts.
Analysis and Context: The authors and editors analyze the political situation in the winter of 1917–1918, the reasons for the Ukrainian People’s Republic’s lack of military preparedness, and the strategic significance of the battle. The defenders of Kruty accomplished their mission—they held back the enemy for several days, which allowed the UNR government to sign the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk and gain international recognition.
Cult of Remembrance and Sacrifice: Significant attention is devoted to the reburial of the fallen heroes at Askold’s Grave in Kyiv in the spring of 1918, as well as to how the feat at Kruty became a symbol of Ukrainian patriotism for subsequent generations (in particular for the OUN, the UPA, and modern defenders of Ukraine).
