The Black Council is about the "black council" in Nizhyn, where the fate of the Hetmanate was decided. Kulish shows the conflict between the Cossack elite and the rank-and-file, between idealism and self-interest.

The novel became the foundation of Ukrainian historical fiction. Kulish created an epic canvas of the era, full of vivid characters and historical detail.
