Lysa Hora — A Legend

Lysa Hora — A Legend

A legend about love, loss, and the mysterious Lysa Hora.

In Velyka Oleksandrivka stands Lysa Hora. Once, it was called Bila (White) Mountain.

They say that long ago, two lovers met here. But on that mountain, witches held their sabbath.

A witch wanted to take the young man, but he remained faithful to his love.

The girl was thrown into the river, and the boy was taken away by the witches…

Since then, the mountain became barren — Lysa (Bald).

And at midnight, one can see the lovers here — if the heart is pure.
Near the forest itself, not far from Velyka Oleksandrivka, stands a tall sandy hill.
Today it is called Lysa Hora, but once, they say, it was known as Bila. Old people tell many tales about this place, but most often — this one…
Long, long ago, perhaps in the days of serfdom, or maybe even in the Cossack era, a young man and a girl were in love. One night they got into a boat and sailed along the Inhulets River. When they reached Lysa Hora, they froze in fear: something страшное was happening at its вершина! Someone howled, groaned, and laughed like mad…
The young couple wanted to turn back, but suddenly the Inhulets grew restless, the water churned, the boat spun, overturned, and an unseen force carried them onto Lysa Hora.
The lovers found themselves on the hill and stood petrified with astonishment. Witches were feasting there: dancing, howling, laughing, dragging each other by their braids across the sand. And one — very beautiful — sat aside in silence, looking deeply sad. But when she saw the young man, her eyes lit up with joy. The witch sprang up, ran to him, and began pulling him into the dance. But he broke free — and ran to his beloved. Enraged, the witch seized his girl and threw her into the Inhulets.
The young man did not know what to do. Then he drew a knife and struck the witch in the chest. She fell, and her black blood covered the entire hill. When the other witches saw this, they attacked the young man and carried him away into the unknown…
From that time on, nothing grew on the hill, and it was called Lysa (Bald). And every midnight, the girl rises from the Inhulets and calls for her beloved. She calls until he comes. He appears to her from the степь, and for a long, long time they embrace and kiss. But when the third rooster crows — the lovers vanish…
Death could not overcome their love! Even now, they say, at midnight near Lysa Hora one can hear the voice of the drowned girl and see her in the embrace of her beloved. But not everyone is granted this — only those whose hearts hold true and faithful love…
