Ivan Bahrianyi "Tihrolovy"

A novel with an intriguing and even somewhat wild title, "The Tiger Hunters" (Tihrolovy), opens a world to the reader where people dare to challenge nature itself—confronting the majestic and dangerous predator face-to-face, catching it not with iron traps, but with their own bare hands, through sheer strength of spirit and the courage of their hearts. However, the greatest danger lurks not in the thickets of the taiga, but in the nets of the totalitarian machine—a system as cruel and ruthless as a hungry beast.

This novel depicts the emergence of the "new Ukrainian," an individual capable of overcoming the terrifying regime of the imperial system and winning the right to a future for their people. It is a hymn to the human being who fights for their happiness and emerges victorious.

The work sheds light on the horrific pages of Ukrainian history — the Stalinist repressions of the 1930s. The story is based on autobiographical events: Ivan Bahrianyi’s own exile to the Far East in the GULAG system. After escaping from an NKVD death train transporting prisoners to Siberia, the author of The Tiger Hunters lived in the taiga for nearly two years. During this time, he came to know and love this remote, rugged land and its resilient inhabitants.
