Mykola Vingranovsky - Siromanets

This is a touching and profound story about the friendship between a child and a wild animal. At the heart of the story is an old, nearly blind wolf nicknamed Siromanets and a boy named Sasha, who tries to save him from hunters and human cruelty.

An Unusual Friendship: Sasha is not afraid of the wolf because he sees in it not a predator, but a wise, lonely, and exhausted creature. Their bond symbolizes the unity of humanity and nature.

Conflict with Society: The main antagonist is Vasyl Chepizhny, who is obsessed with the idea of killing the wolf. This confrontation embodies the senseless, destructive power of man against the natural world.

Humanization of the Beast: The author masterfully describes Siromanets’ thoughts and feelings. In Vingranovsky’s work, the wolf is a noble hero who possesses a sense of dignity and remembers kindness.

Journey and salvation: The plot takes the hero from his native village to Odessa (where they attempt to treat the wolf) and back to the steppe, demonstrating that freedom is more precious to a wild creature than safety.
