Carbide is about life on the Ukrainian-Slovak-Hungarian border, where smuggling carbide is part of everyday life. Liubka creates a vivid world of "border people" living between countries, languages, and laws.

The novel became one of the most discussed Ukrainian works of the 2010s, winning literary prizes. Liubka created a unique Transcarpathian chronotope in contemporary Ukrainian prose.
