Mexican Gothic — Silvia Moreno-Garcia

“Mexican Gothic” is a bestseller by Canadian author Sylvia Moreno-García, who is of Mexican descent, published in 2020. It is an atmospheric horror novel that skillfully weaves together the classic traditions of Gothic literature with Mexican culture and history.

The story takes place in Mexico in the 1950s. The main character is Noemi Taboada, a glamorous, educated, and free-spirited young woman from Mexico City’s high society. Her father receives a disturbing, rambling letter from Catalina—Noemí’s cousin, who recently married an English aristocrat and moved to his ancestral estate. In the letter, Catalina begs for help, claiming that her husband is poisoning her and that she sees ghosts within the walls of the house.

Her father sends Noemi to investigate the situation. This is how she ends up at “High Place”—the gloomy, isolated, and dilapidated Doyle family estate, situated high in the mountains, where fog reigns constantly.
