The central character of the book is White Fang, the offspring of a wolf and a wild dog. Most of the novel is told through his eyes, through the lens of an animal’s perception, which makes this work unique.

White Fang’s life is a long and complex journey of evolution and adaptation, which can be divided into several key stages:

The Wild (The Northern Wilderness): Born into a wolf pack, he learns the harsh laws of survival, where the rule is: “Eat or be eaten.”

The Indian Camp: His first master is an Indian named Gray Beaver. Here, White Fang learns of the existence of humans (“gods,” as he calls them) and learns to serve them by pulling a sled. However, due to the cruelty of the other dogs, he becomes an aloof and aggressive loner.

Dog Fights and Handsome Smith: The wolf is bought by the cruel and cowardly Handsome Smith. He turns White Fang into a true, ferocious, and ruthless killing machine in bloody dogfights. At this stage, the hero nearly perishes in the jaws of a bulldog.

Rescue and Rebirth: The subdued and wounded beast is saved by the kind engineer Udon Scott. With patience, kindness, and love, he works a miracle—he melts the wolf’s icy heart, turning him into a loyal friend. At the end of the book, White Fang moves with his master to sunny California and even saves the Scott family from the threat of a fugitive criminal.
