The Thirteenth Tale — Diane Setterfield

The Thirteenth Tale (2006) is a Gothic novel by Diane Setterfield about a young bibliophile invited by an aging writer to record her biography, which conceals a dark secret.

The Thirteenth Tale is inspired by the classic Gothic tradition of the Brontës and Wilkie Collins. Margaret Lea, a bibliophile and biographer, receives an invitation from Vida Winter — a mysterious writer who has never told the truth about herself.

"The Thirteenth" is the missing story from Winter's collection, a secret she finally dares to reveal.
