Death and the Penguin (1996) is Andriy Kurkov's most famous novel, which brought him international fame. The story of a Kyiv obituary writer and his penguin Misha, caught up in a criminal intrigue.

Death and the Penguin is Kurkov's signature novel. Writer Viktor pens obituaries for a newspaper, while his pet penguin Misha becomes an unwitting witness and participant in dangerous events in post-Soviet Kyiv.

The novel has been translated into more than 30 languages and became one of the most successful Ukrainian books on the world market. Kurkov created a unique genre — post-Soviet noir with absurdist humor.
