pcs

The Garden of Gethsemane describes the arrest, interrogation, and suffering of a young Ukrainian poet in Stalinist dungeons. The title references the Garden of Gethsemane where Christ suffered before crucifixion.

Bahrianyj himself endured Stalinist prisons and camps, making the novel largely autobiographical. The Garden of Gethsemane is one of the first artistic testimonies of Stalinist terror in Ukrainian literature, written with devastating power.
