Yuri Andrukhovych’s *Radio Night* is both an adventure noir and a deeply melancholic parable. To describe this work in detail, yet without unnecessary fluff, it is worth highlighting three main layers:
1. Plot: A musician on the barricades and in exileThe protagonist, Yosyp Rothsky, is a pianist whose life was transformed on the barricades (a clear allusion to Ukraine’s Maidan protests). He became a symbol of the revolution, playing his instrument during the clashes, but after the uprising’s defeat, he is forced to flee. He is haunted by the secret police, his own memories, and a femme fatale. The novel resembles a spy thriller, where instead of a gun, the hero wields piano keys.
2. Atmosphere: The Aesthetics of the Nighttime AirwavesThe novel’s title refers to the radio station that Rothsky runs from a secret location. It is his way of communicating with the world.
Here, the night is a space for those who don’t fit into the daytime, “proper” order.
Music (from Tom Waits to the classics) permeates the text, creating a unique rhythm. The book effectively has its own soundtrack.
3. Philosophy: Defeat as a New BeginningThis is a novel about “beautiful defeat.” Andrukhovych reflects on what happens to a revolutionary when the crowd forgets him.
Is there any point in the struggle if it does not end in victory?
Can an artist remain free in a world of total control?
Rotsy is a modern Orpheus who descends into the hell of contemporary politics to find his music and love.
