Quo Vadis (1896) tells of the love between Roman patrician Vinicius and the Christian woman Lygia against the backdrop of Nero's persecution of Christians. "Quo vadis" ("Where are you going?") is the question Peter legendarily asked Christ when leaving Rome.

The novel became a worldwide bestseller and played a key role in Sienkiewicz receiving the Nobel Prize (1905). Film adaptations of Quo Vadis continue to appear in the 21st century.
