The Universe Behind Barbed Wire is a memoir by Myroslav Marynovych, a Ukrainian human rights activist and member of the Ukrainian Helsinki Group, about years of Soviet imprisonment.
The Universe Behind Barbed Wire is an account of Marynovych's years in Soviet labor camps and exile. One of the founders of the Ukrainian Helsinki Group, he was arrested in 1977.
The memoirs became not only testimony of repression but also a document of spiritual resilience. Marynovych shows that the "universe" — inner freedom — exists even behind barbed wire.
