Viy is a tale by Mykola Hohol, first published in 1835 in the Mirgorod collection. It is Gogol's only work in the pure horror genre, based, according to the author, on a folk legend.

Khoma Brut, a seminarian-philosopher returning from the seminary, ends up at a farmstead where he must read prayers over the body of a dead young woman for three nights. With each night, the horror intensifies, until on the third night Viy himself appears — a monster with heavy eyelids.

The tale became one of Gogol's most recognizable works and the basis for numerous film adaptations.
