Eneida — Ivan Kotliarevskyi

Eneida (1798) by Ivan Kotliarevskyi is a burlesque poem that marked the beginning of modern Ukrainian literature. Virgil's heroes are transplanted into Ukrainian Cossack realities.

Eneida is a work in which Kotliarevskyi dressed Virgil's heroes in Cossack clothing. Aeneas and his companions are Zaporizhian Cossacks, their adventures described in lively Ukrainian with humor and satire.

The poem is considered the first major work of modern Ukrainian literature in the vernacular. It became a symbol of Ukrainian literary independence and folk wit.
