Marusia — Hryhoriy Kvitka-Osnovianenko

Marusia is a novella by Hryhoriy Kvitka-Osnovianenko, one of the first works of Ukrainian literary prose. A sentimental story of a Ukrainian girl who became a symbol of purity and self-sacrifice.

Marusia is a foundational work of Ukrainian prose, written by Kvitka-Osnovianenko in 1834. The story of Marusia, a girl from a Ukrainian village, became a model of the sentimental novella and established Ukrainian as a literary language.

The novella was enormously important for Ukrainian literature, proving that high prose could be created in the Ukrainian language.
