Sweet Darusia — Maria Matios

Sweet Darusia (2004) is Maria Matios's most famous novel, awarded the Taras Shevchenko National Prize. The drama of a Bukovinian woman bearing the mark of historical trauma.

Sweet Darusia tells the story of a woman nicknamed "sweet" in childhood for her gentle nature, but whose life became nothing but bitterness. The action unfolds in a Bukovinian village against the backdrop of 20th-century occupations.

Matios created a piercing text about memory, trauma, and muteness — Darusia lost the ability to speak under the weight of unbearable memories. The novel has been translated into many languages.
