Leviathan — Boris Akunin

“Leviathan” is Boris Akunin’s third novel in the well-known series about the adventures of the aristocratic detective Erast Fandorin. Written in the “closed-room mystery” genre, where the circle of suspects is confined to a single location, the story is set in 1878.

It all begins with a gruesome crime in Paris: the wealthy Lord Littleby, his seven servants, and his two children are brutally murdered in their own home. The killer did not take the family’s fortune, but did steal a golden statue of the god Shiva and an antique Indian shawl. At the crime scene, Police Commissioner Gustave Gosh finds the only piece of evidence—a gold badge in the shape of the emblem of the luxury liner “Leviathan.”

 

The commissioner discovers that such badges were issued only to first-class passengers and senior officers of this gigantic, ultra-modern liner, which is just setting sail for India. Gosh boards the ship to identify the killer among the passengers in the VIP lounge. A young Russian diplomat, Erast Fandorin, also finds himself in this same lounge.
