Maria — Ulas Samchuk

Maria — a famous novel by Ulas Samchuk about the tragedy of the Holodomor, one of the first literary responses to the genocide of the Ukrainian people.

Maria is a chronicle-novel by Ukrainian writer Ulas Samchuk, written in 1934 in the immediate aftermath of the Holodomor tragedy of 1932–1933. The work became one of the first literary testimonies to the mass famine in Ukraine.

Through the fate of a simple Ukrainian peasant woman Maria, the author reveals the scale of the national catastrophe. The novel is notable for its epic scope and deep compassion for the suffering of the people, and has become a classic of Ukrainian literature.
