Diary of a Madman — Mykola Hohol

Diary of a Madman is a story by Mykola Hohol (1835), written as a diary of a minor civil servant Aksenty Poprishchin, who gradually loses his mind. One of the most psychologically profound works of 19th-century literature.

Diary of a Madman is a story by Mykola Hohol from the Petersburg Tales cycle. Titular councillor Aksenty Poprishchin keeps a diary recording his everyday life, unrequited love for his superior's daughter, and gradual descent into madness.

First Poprishchin "hears" a conversation between two dogs, then begins reading their "correspondence," and finally declares himself King Ferdinand VIII of Spain. The ending — a cry from the madhouse — is one of the most piercing moments in literature.
