ENG: Yuriy Andrukhovych - Bu-Ba-Bu

This is not a single work, but a legendary literary group whose name stands for Burlesque-Balagan-Buffoonery. Its members included Yuri Andrukhovych (“Patriarch”), Viktor Neborak (“Prosecutor”), and Oleksandr Irvanets (“Treasurer”).

Breaking Taboos: They were the first to openly use slang and mixed language and to poke fun at “sacred” topics, which had previously been considered unacceptable.
The Spirit of Play: For “Bu-Ba-Bu,” a poem is a game, a performance. During this period (in the collections “Sky and Squares” and “Downtown”), Andrukhovych created the image of an urban intellectual-troublemaker.
Blending of eras: A single text might combine Baroque metaphors with a description of a filthy Soviet dormitory. This was a way to revitalize the Ukrainian language, making it modern and “alive.”
Performances: Their performances were true spectacles. The most famous event was the extravaganza “Chrysler Imperial” (1992), where literature transformed into a rock concert and theatrical performance.
